The Virtuous Wife

"Who can find a virtuous wife? For her worth is far above rubies." - Proverbs 31:10

Reflection

Proverbs 31 is often recognized as the passage that describes the characteristics of a virtuous woman. It is a model of wisdom, strength, and godly devotion that speaks to both women seeking to honor God in their lives and men desiring a marriage built on faith and integrity. This verse sets the tone for the entire passage, emphasizing the immense worth of a woman who walks in virtue.

The phrase "far above rubies" speaks to value beyond material wealth. In biblical times, rubies were rare and precious, signifying great beauty and worth. Yet, Scripture teaches that a virtuous wife holds even greater significance. Her character, devotion, and faithfulness make her priceless in the eyes of her husband and, more importantly, in the eyes of God.

A godly marriage is built upon more than outward beauty or fleeting emotions. It is rooted in spiritual strength, mutual respect, and a commitment to serve one another. The woman described in Proverbs 31 is not just a diligent worker or a provider—she is a woman who fears the Lord. Her virtue is not based on human standards but on her dedication to God’s principles. In a marriage, this foundation creates trust, strengthens love, and deepens companionship.

For husbands, this verse calls them to cherish and honor their wives, recognizing their immense worth. For wives, it serves as an encouragement to pursue godliness, knowing that true beauty is found in virtue and faith. A marriage centered on Christ thrives when both husband and wife seek to grow in godly character, encouraging one another to live with wisdom and grace.

Personal Application

Marriage is a sacred bond, and Proverbs 31:10 reminds both men and women of their responsibilities in fostering a Christ-centered relationship.

For women, this verse is a reminder that virtue is what makes a marriage strong. It is not about perfection but about a heart that is anchored in faith, kindness, and wisdom. Seeking to be a godly wife is about embracing the characteristics found throughout Proverbs 31—being trustworthy, diligent, compassionate, and above all, devoted to God. Consider ways to deepen your relationship with Christ, knowing that your love for God strengthens your ability to love your husband with grace and commitment.

For men, this verse speaks to the importance of valuing and honoring their wives. A virtuous wife is a gift from God, and recognizing her worth means treating her with love, patience, and respect. Consider how you cherish your spouse—do you acknowledge her strengths, support her spiritually, and encourage her growth in faith? A husband who walks in godliness uplifts his wife and strengthens the unity within their home.

Marriage flourishes when both individuals seek God first. Proverbs 31:10 is not just about finding a virtuous wife, but about cultivating a marriage where both partners honor Him through their actions, words, and love for one another.

Prayer

Father, Thank You for the gift of marriage and for the wisdom found in Your Word. Help me to embrace the calling to love and honor my spouse in the way You designed. If I am a wife, guide me to walk in virtue, seeking to reflect Your love and wisdom in my home. Strengthen me to be patient, kind, and faithful, always growing in my devotion to You so that I may serve my family with grace. If I am a husband, teach me to cherish and uplift my wife, recognizing her value as a precious gift from You. Help me to lead in faith, showing love and support in every season of our marriage. May our relationship be built upon Your truth, reflecting Your grace and goodness in all that we do. Strengthen our hearts to seek You first so that our marriage may be a testimony of Your love. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
