She girds herself with strength, And strengthens her arms. She perceives that her merchandise is good, And her lamp does not go out by night. She stretches out her hands to the distaff, And her hand holds the spindle. She extends her hand to the poor, Yes, she reaches out her hands to the needy." - Proverbs 31:17-20

Reflection:

Proverbs 31:17-20 paints a vivid picture of a Godly wife who embodies strength, diligence, and compassion. This passage highlights the virtues of hard work, physical strength, and a heart for service. The woman described here is not only industrious but also possesses a deep sense of responsibility and care for others. Her strength is not just physical but also moral and spiritual, enabling her to fulfill her duties with excellence and grace.

The phrase "She sets about her work vigorously; her arms are strong for her tasks" emphasizes the importance of diligence and physical strength. It suggests that a Godly wife is committed to her responsibilities and performs them with energy and enthusiasm. This strength is not merely for personal gain but is directed towards the well-being of her family and community.

The verse "She sees that her trading is profitable, and her lamp does not go out at night" speaks to her wisdom and perseverance. She is a prudent manager of her resources, ensuring that her efforts yield positive results. Her lamp burning through the night symbolizes her unwavering dedication and vigilance. She is always prepared and ready to meet the needs of her household.

In "In her hand she holds the distaff and grasps the spindle with her fingers," we see her skill and craftsmanship. These tools of spinning wool represent her ability to create and provide. Her hands are busy with productive work, contributing to the sustenance and comfort of her family.

Finally, "She opens her arms to the poor and extends her hands to the needy" reveals her compassionate nature. A Godly wife is not only concerned with her own household but also reaches out to those in need. Her generosity and kindness reflect the love of Christ, making her a beacon of hope and support in her community.

Personal Application:

  1. Diligence and Strength: Let us approach our tasks with vigor and dedication. Whether it's our work, household chores, or community service, we can perform them with enthusiasm and strength. Physical fitness and health are also important, as they enable us to carry out our responsibilities effectively.

  2. Wisdom and Perseverance: We can be wise managers of our resources, ensuring that our efforts are fruitful. Let us be vigilant and prepared, always ready to meet the needs of our families and communities. Perseverance in our endeavors will lead to success and fulfillment.

  3. Skill and Craftsmanship: Developing our skills and talents can help us contribute meaningfully to our households and communities. Whether it's cooking, sewing, gardening, or any other craft, our abilities can be a source of provision and comfort for those we love.

  4. Compassion and Generosity: Let us open our hearts and hands to those in need. Acts of kindness and generosity reflect the love of Christ and make a positive impact on our communities. We can volunteer, donate, or simply offer a helping hand to those who are struggling.

Prayer:

Dear Heavenly Father, Thank you for the beautiful example of a Godly wife in Proverbs 31:17-20. Help us to embody the virtues of diligence, strength, wisdom, skill, and compassion in our daily lives. Grant us the physical and moral strength to perform our tasks with excellence and grace. May we be wise managers of our resources, always prepared and vigilant. Teach us to develop our skills and talents, so we can provide for our families and contribute to our communities.
