The Power of Encouragement

Proverbs 12:25 - "Anxiety in the heart of man causes depression, but a good word makes it glad."

Reflection

Anxiety is a burden that weighs heavily on the heart. It can cloud our thoughts, drain our energy, and make even the simplest tasks feel overwhelming. Proverbs 12:25 acknowledges this reality, recognizing that worry and fear can lead to deep discouragement. But this verse does not stop at describing the problem—it also offers a solution. A good word has the power to lift the heart, to bring encouragement, and to restore joy.

Throughout scripture, God reminds us that He is our refuge in times of trouble. Jesus Himself spoke of the dangers of worry, urging His followers to trust in God’s provision. In Matthew 6:25-34, He reassures us that our Heavenly Father knows our needs and cares for us deeply. Anxiety may be a natural human response, but God calls us to something greater—faith in His promises.

A kind word, whether spoken by a friend or found in scripture, has the ability to shift our perspective. It reminds us that we are not alone, that God is present, and that hope is never lost. Encouragement is a gift we can both receive and give. When we speak life into someone’s situation, we participate in God’s work of lifting burdens and restoring joy.

Personal Application

Consider the moments when anxiety has weighed on your heart. Perhaps there have been seasons of uncertainty, financial struggles, or personal challenges that have left you feeling overwhelmed. In those times, what words have brought you comfort? Maybe it was a verse from scripture, a prayer from a friend, or a simple reminder that God is in control.

Now think about the people around you. Who in your life might be carrying the weight of anxiety? It could be a family member, a coworker, or even a stranger. Proverbs 12:25 encourages us to be intentional about offering good words—words of encouragement, truth, and hope. A simple act of kindness, a thoughtful message, or a heartfelt prayer can make a profound difference in someone’s life.

One way to apply this verse is by filling your own heart with God’s word. When anxiety creeps in, turn to scripture for reassurance. Meditate on passages that remind you of God’s faithfulness, His provision, and His love. Let His truth replace fear with peace.

Another way to live out this verse is by being a source of encouragement to others. Make it a habit to speak life into the people around you. Offer words of affirmation, remind them of God’s promises, and be a listening ear when they need support. Your words have the power to bring healing and joy.

Prayer

Father, Thank You for Your promise to be with me in times of anxiety and uncertainty. When my heart feels heavy, remind me of Your faithfulness. Help me to trust in Your provision and to rest in Your peace.Lord, I ask that You fill my heart with Your truth so that I may be a source of encouragement to others. Teach me to speak words that uplift, to offer kindness to those who are struggling, and to reflect Your love in all that I do. When worry threatens to take hold, help me to turn to You. Strengthen my faith, renew my mind, and guide me in Your wisdom. May my words bring joy and hope to those around me, just as Your word brings life to my soul. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
