"And Thomas answered and said to Him, 'My Lord and my God!'"

- John 20:28

Reflection:

The declaration of Thomas in John 20:28 is a profound acknowledgment of Jesus' divine nature and His lordship. After witnessing the resurrected Christ and seeing the marks of the crucifixion, Thomas' doubt transformed into unwavering faith. His exclamation, "My Lord and my God!" encapsulates the recognition of Jesus as both Lord and God. This moment is significant because it highlights the personal relationship we are invited to have with Jesus. He is not just a distant deity; He is our Lord, intimately involved in our lives.

Reflecting on this truth, we can turn to Philippians 2:9-11 (NKJV), which states, "Therefore God also has highly exalted Him and given Him the name which is above every name, that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, of those in heaven, and of those on earth, and of those under the earth, and that every tongue should confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father." This passage emphasizes the exaltation of Jesus and the universal recognition of His lordship. It reminds us that Jesus is not only our personal Lord but also the Lord of all creation.

Personal Application:

Recognizing Jesus as our Lord has profound implications for our daily lives. Here are a few ways we can apply this truth:

  • Submit to His Authority: Acknowledging Jesus as Lord means recognizing His authority over every aspect of our lives. This includes our decisions, actions, and attitudes. We are called to submit to His will and follow His teachings. This submission is not out of obligation, but out of love and reverence for who He is. Reflect on areas of your life where you need to surrender control to Jesus and seek His guidance.
  • Live in Obedience: Jesus said, "If you love Me, keep My commandments" (John 14:15 NKJV). Living under the lordship of Jesus means striving to obey His commands and live according to His example. This involves studying His Word, applying His teachings, and seeking to live a life that honors Him. Consider how you can align your actions and decisions with the teachings of Jesus.
  • Cultivate a Relationship: Jesus desires a personal relationship with each of us. As our Lord, He invites us to know Him intimately and to experience His presence in our lives. Spend time in prayer, worship, and reading Scripture to deepen your relationship with Jesus. Seek to know Him more and to experience His love and grace in a personal way.
  • Be a Witness: Recognizing Jesus as Lord compels us to share the Good News with others. We are called to be witnesses of His love and grace, sharing the message of salvation with those around us. Look for opportunities to share your faith and to demonstrate the love of Jesus through your actions. Let your life be a testament to the transformative power of knowing Jesus as Lord.

Thought-Provoking Questions:

  1. How does recognizing Jesus as your Lord impact your daily decisions and actions?
  2. In what ways can you live in obedience to Jesus' teachings and commands?
  3. How can you deepen your personal relationship with Jesus and experience His presence in your life?
  4. What steps can you take to share the message of Jesus with others and be a witness of His love?

Prayer:

Heavenly Father, we thank You for the gift of Your Son, Jesus Christ. As we reflect on His lordship, we are reminded of His authority and His love for us. Help us to submit to His will, to live in obedience to His teachings, and to cultivate a deeper relationship with Him. May our lives be a testament to His grace and mercy, and may we share the message of His love with others. In Jesus' name, we pray. Amen.
