6:7 - Respecting What God Is Doing

 "Let the work of this house of God alone; let the governor of the Jews and the elders of the Jews build this house of God on its site." — Ezra 6:7

Reflection

When the Israelites began rebuilding the temple in Jerusalem after years in exile, they faced a lot of opposition. People around them tried to discourage their efforts, spreading rumors and even writing letters to powerful leaders to get the work stopped. In Ezra 6:7, however, King Darius responds to these complaints in a surprising way. Instead of shutting down the project, he commands that the opposers should leave the Jews alone and allow them to continue building God’s house. This verse stands out as a turning point, where God’s plan moves forward despite outside resistance.

The historical context of this verse shows us something important about God’s sovereignty—His ultimate authority over all things. Even though the Israelites faced setbacks, God worked through a foreign king to protect their mission. Their enemies may have tried to block the temple, but God’s purpose could not be stopped. This reminds us that God can use anyone, even unlikely people or situations, to accomplish His will. When you feel like others are against you or things aren’t going your way, remember that God is still in control, just as He was for the Israelites.

Another lesson from Ezra 6:7 is about respecting the work God is doing in others. King Darius recognized that the temple project wasn’t just about building a structure—it was about honoring God. He ordered everyone to let the Jews continue, showing respect for their faith and their calling. In our own lives, it’s easy to judge, criticize, or interfere with what someone else is doing for God. As a teen, you might sometimes feel like people don’t understand your faith or your choices. Maybe you’ve been teased for doing the right thing or felt pressure to give up on something God has put on your heart. Ezra 6:7 is a reminder that you’re not alone—others have faced opposition, too, but God protected and guided them. When you feel discouraged, trust that God sees your efforts and will make a way for you, even if it comes from an unexpected source.

This verse also speaks to the importance of trusting God’s timing. The rebuilding of the temple didn’t happen overnight. The people had to be patient and keep working, even when it was hard. In the same way, there might be things you’re praying about or working toward that don’t seem to be happening yet. Don’t lose heart. Keep doing what’s right, keep believing, and trust that God’s timing is always best—even if you don’t see the results right now.

Finally, Ezra 6:7 encourages you to respect others’ journeys with God. Just like the king told the opposers to let the Jews build, you can make a difference by cheering others on and not standing in the way of what God is doing in their lives. Whether it’s a friend trying to grow in faith, a sibling making better choices, or someone new in church, your encouragement can help them keep going. Let’s be people who build up, not tear down.
