"Now it was in the heart of my father David to build a temple for the name of the Lord God of Israel." — 2 Chronicles 6:7

Reflection

Have you ever had a dream or idea that you couldn’t make happen, even though you really wanted to? In 2 Chronicles 6:7, we find King Solomon talking about his father David. David had a deep desire to build a temple for God—a special place where people could worship and connect with Him. But even though David’s heart was in the right place, God told him that he wouldn’t be the one to build it. Instead, the task would go to his son, Solomon.

What’s amazing about this verse is that God didn’t just look at what David accomplished; He saw the intention behind David’s actions. God honored David’s desire, even though David didn’t get to finish what he started. This shows us that God values our motives—the reasons why we do things. Sometimes, you might try your best, but things don’t work out the way you hope. God still sees your effort and the love in your heart. He cares more about your “why” than your “how much.”

In a world that often measures success by results, it’s comforting to know that God pays attention to our motives. Whether you’re helping a friend, working hard in school, or making choices that honor God, what matters most is your heart. You don’t have to be perfect or accomplish something huge for God to notice you. He’s looking for faithfulness, sincerity, and a willingness to do what’s right, even when it’s hard or goes unnoticed.

Personal Application

As a teen, you might feel pressure to achieve, impress others, or get everything right. But this verse teaches that your intentions matter to God, even when your plans don’t pan out. Maybe you want to make a difference in your family, school, or church, but things feel out of your control. Remember, God sees and values your heart—the part of you that wants to do good, help others, and honor Him.

Take a moment to think about your dreams and the things you care about. Are your motives rooted in love, kindness, and faithfulness? If so, trust that God notices, even if others don’t. You can honor God by showing integrity in small ways—like being honest, helping a friend, or choosing what’s right when it isn’t easy. These everyday choices are building blocks for a life that honors God, no matter the outcome.

Don’t be discouraged if you don’t always see big results or if your efforts go unnoticed. Like David, your willingness to serve and your honest intentions are valuable to God. Sometimes, He will use your dreams in ways you never expected, or through someone else, just as He did with Solomon. Keep trusting God with your plans and know that He’s weaving your faithfulness into His bigger story.

Thought-Provoking Questions

  1. Can you think of a time when you wanted to do something good but couldn’t finish it? How did that make you feel, and how do you think God saw your effort?
  2. Why do you think God cares about our motives and intentions more than just the results?
  3. What is one small way you can show faithfulness or integrity in your daily life, even if no one else notices?
  4. Are there any dreams or desires you need to trust God with, knowing He sees your heart?

Prayer

God, thank You for seeing my heart and caring about my intentions, even when things don’t work out the way I hoped. Help me to honor You in the small choices I make every day. Teach me to trust You with my dreams and desires, knowing that You value my faithfulness more than my accomplishments. Give me the courage to keep doing what’s right, even when it’s hard or unnoticed. Use my life to bring Your love and hope to others, and remind me that You are working through me, one step at a time. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
