Worship Unplugged: To God be the Glory

“Oh, give thanks to the Lord! Call upon His name; Make known His deeds among the peoples!”

— 1 Chronicles 16:8

Reflection

The hymn "To God be the Glory" resounds with gratitude and awe for the mighty works of God. Its opening lines, “To God be the glory, great things He has done,” echo the call of 1 Chronicles 16:8, where God’s people are urged to give thanks, call on His name, and proclaim His deeds to the world. This hymn is a celebration of God’s redemptive acts—His love that sent Jesus to the cross, His power that raised Him from the dead, and His grace that welcomes us into His family. The biblical truth at the heart of this song is that God alone deserves all glory, honor, and praise for the salvation He has accomplished.

Giving glory to God is not just a response to what He has done, but an ongoing posture of the heart. The hymn reminds us that every aspect of our redemption—from forgiveness to new life—is a gift of grace, not something we could ever earn. When we reflect on the “great things” God has done, our hearts are moved to worship. We remember that He is the Author of our story, the One who brings hope out of despair and light out of darkness. Our praise becomes a testimony, inviting others to see and experience the goodness of God for themselves

The call to “make known His deeds among the peoples” is a call to witness. As we sing “To God be the Glory,” we join a chorus of believers across generations and nations, united in declaring the wonders of God’s love. Our worship is not meant to be hidden, but shared—so that the whole earth may know the greatness of the Lord. In every season, whether in joy or trial, we are invited to lift our voices in praise, trusting that God is always at work and always worthy of glory.

Personal Application

Living for God’s glory begins with a grateful heart. Take time each day to remember and thank God for the specific ways He has shown His faithfulness in your life. Write down answered prayers, moments of unexpected provision, or times when God’s peace sustained you. As you cultivate gratitude, you’ll find that praise becomes a natural response, even in the midst of challenges. Let your thankfulness overflow into worship, both in private and with others.

Making known God’s deeds means sharing your story. Consider how you can testify to God’s work in your life—whether through a conversation with a friend, a note of encouragement, or a public act of service. Your experiences of God’s grace and power are not just for you; they are meant to inspire faith in others. Look for opportunities to point people to Jesus, giving Him the glory for every victory and every step of transformation.

Finally, let your life be a song of praise. Worship is more than music; it’s a way of living that honors God in every thought, word, and action. Ask God to help you reflect His character in your relationships, your work, and your choices. When you face difficulties, choose to praise Him for who He is, not just for what He does. As you live for God’s glory, you’ll discover deeper joy, greater peace, and a renewed sense of purpose—knowing that your life points others to the greatness of the Lord.

Thought-Provoking Questions

  1. What “great things” has God done in your life that you can thank Him for today?
  2. How can you make God’s deeds known to those around you in practical ways?
  3. In what areas of your life do you find it challenging to give God the glory, and why?
  4. Who might be encouraged by hearing your story of God’s faithfulness?

Prayer

Heavenly Father, thank You for the great things You have done. I give You all the glory for Your love, grace, and redemption in my life. Help me to remember Your faithfulness and to share Your deeds with those around me. Fill my heart with gratitude and my mouth with praise, so that my life may point others to You. May everything I do bring honor to Your name. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
