His Name is Holy: Jesus

“And behold, you will conceive in your womb and bring forth a Son, and shall call His name JESUS.” — Luke 1:31  

Reflection:

The English name Jesus comes to us through a long and meaningful path of language. In the world of the New Testament, the name appears in Greek as Ἰησοῦς, transliterated Iēsous. Behind that Greek form stands the Hebrew and Aramaic name Yeshua, written יֵשׁוּעַ, which is a shortened form of Yehoshua, the name also translated in English as Joshua. The name carries the sense, “The LORD saves” or “Yahweh is salvation.” That is why the angel’s command in Luke 1:31 is so full of meaning. Mary was not told to choose a pleasant-sounding name. She was told heaven’s chosen name for the Son who would come to save. From the very beginning, the name Jesus declared His mission.

The history of this name stretches across the story of Scripture. In the Old Testament, Joshua was the leader who brought Israel into the land of promise, and later Jeshua was a name associated with restoration after exile. By the time of Mary and Joseph, Yeshua was a familiar Jewish name, but in Jesus it took on its fullest and final glory. As the name moved from Hebrew and Aramaic into Greek as Iēsous, then into Latin as Iesus, and finally into English as Jesus, its sound changed from language to language, but its meaning did not. The saving purpose of God remained constant. The Lord was sending not merely another teacher or leader, but the true Savior whose very name proclaimed what He came to do.

The importance of the name Jesus today is just as great as it was when Gabriel first spoke it. We do not honor His name merely because it is ancient, familiar, or precious to Christian tradition. We honor it because it reveals who He is. Jesus is the One in whom God’s saving purpose has come near. His name reminds us that salvation is not something we achieve, but something God has provided in His Son. In a world full of fear, guilt, confusion, and false hopes, the name Jesus still speaks peace, rescue, mercy, and authority. It calls us to reverence, faith, and confidence, because the One who bears this name is still the Lord who saves.

Personal Application:

Because His name is Jesus, I am reminded that my deepest need is not self-improvement but salvation. I may be tempted to think that I simply need more discipline, more clarity, or more strength, but the name Jesus tells me something deeper about myself and something greater about God. I need saving, and God has acted to save. This humbles me because it confronts my pride, but it also comforts me because it means I do not have to be my own rescuer. The burden of redemption does not rest on my shoulders. It rests on the One whose very name means that the Lord saves.

The name Jesus also teaches me to trust God in a personal way. Salvation is not an abstract idea floating above real life. It reaches into my sin, my fears, my regrets, and my weakness. When I call on Jesus, I am not repeating a distant religious word. I am calling on the living Savior who knows exactly what I need. His name gives me confidence to pray, courage to repent, and hope to keep walking when I feel discouraged. I can bring to Him what I would rather hide, because His saving heart is revealed in His saving name.

Finally, knowing the name of Jesus should shape the way I live each day. If His name means that the Lord saves, then I should live with gratitude, worship, and holy confidence. I do not have to be ruled by shame, because Jesus saves. I do not have to be mastered by fear, because Jesus saves. I do not have to lose heart when the world feels dark, because Jesus saves. His name steadies me in trial and softens me in worship. It calls me to honor Him not only with my words, but with a life that reflects trust in the Savior who bears the name above every name.

Teach me to love Your name, honor Your name, and rest in the salvation You alone provide. Let my life reflect gratitude, reverence, and confidence in the Savior who was named by heaven before His birth. In Jesus’ name, amen.
