“in everything give thanks; for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus for you.” — 1 Thessalonians 5:18
Reflection
Gratitude changes the way love sees. It slows the heart long enough to notice gifts that familiarity can cause us to overlook. First Thessalonians 5:18 calls believers to give thanks in everything. This does not mean every circumstance is easy, but it does mean God’s will forms thankful hearts in Christ Jesus. When you pray with gratitude for your significant other, you are choosing to recognize them as a gift rather than taking them for granted.
Thankfulness does not ignore growth areas, conflict, or concerns. It simply refuses to let those things become the only lens. Gratitude helps you remember what is good, beautiful, faithful, kind, courageous, and meaningful about the person you love. It invites you to bless God for who they are and for what He is still doing in them. A thankful heart makes room for patience because it remembers grace.
Ending this devotional journey with gratitude is intentional. After praying over their faith, protection, wisdom, purpose, character, health, relationships, future, and calling, you are invited to pause and simply give thanks. Prayer is not only asking God to work. It is also worshiping Him for the gift of another person. Gratitude helps you trust His continued grace even as the relationship keeps growing.
Gratitude also changes the atmosphere between two people. Words of thanks can soften defensiveness, heal discouragement, and remind someone they are seen. When appreciation is spoken sincerely, it strengthens trust and tenderness. It helps love focus on evidence of God’s goodness instead of only noticing what remains unfinished. A grateful relationship becomes a place where encouragement is practiced often.
As you pray with thanksgiving, let God reveal any entitlement or criticism that has taken root in your heart. It is easy to become familiar with a blessing and forget to honor it. Ask the Lord to help you notice small acts of kindness, growth, faithfulness, and care. Thank Him for the story He is writing in the person you love. Gratitude keeps prayer rooted in worship rather than worry.
Personal Application
Begin by naming specific qualities you are thankful for in your significant other. Thank God for their strengths, personality, growth, kindness, perseverance, humor, faith, courage, or tenderness. Specific gratitude keeps love from becoming vague or entitled. It helps you notice the gifts you may have become used to seeing. Let thankfulness renew your ability to cherish them with fresh attention.
Then consider how you express gratitude directly to them. Do they know what you appreciate? Do your words remind them that they are seen, valued, and loved? Prayer should overflow into speech and action. A thankful heart becomes visible through encouragement, honor, and patience.
Finally, let gratitude continue beyond these twenty days. Keep praying. Keep noticing. Keep surrendering. Keep thanking God, not only when the relationship feels easy, but also when love requires patience, faith, and humility.

Prayer
Lord, thank You for the person I love. Thank You for their life, their story, their growth, their gifts, and the ways You are working in them. Help me notice and honor what is good instead of taking them for granted. Teach me to express gratitude with sincerity and consistency. Continue shaping both of us through prayer, love, humility, and faith. May our relationship glorify You. In Jesus’ name, amen.
This prayer is deeply important in a relationship. Two imperfect people cannot grow together without teachability. Misunderstandings will happen. Blind spots will surface. Apologies will be needed. Guidance may come through Scripture, prayer, mentors, circumstances, or loving conversations. A teachable heart helps love remain soft, honest, and capable of transformation.
