The Bible Was Preserved

 “The grass withers, the flower fades, But the word of our God stands forever.” – Isaiah 40:8

Reflection:

One common challenge to Christianity is the claim that the Bible has been changed so many times we cannot know what it originally said. At first, that can sound convincing, especially if someone says it confidently. But confidence is not the same as evidence. The Bible did not come to us through one mysterious copy passed down in secret. It was copied, shared, quoted, translated, and preserved across many communities over time.

For the New Testament, scholars compare thousands of ancient manuscripts and fragments, along with early translations and quotations from early Christian writers. When copies have differences, those differences can usually be spotted because there are many copies to compare. That may sound strange at first, but it is actually helpful. If a teacher had one student’s notes from class, a mistake might be hard to find. If the teacher had hundreds of students’ notes, comparing them would make it easier to identify what was originally said.

Isaiah reminds us that God’s Word stands forever. That does not mean every copyist was perfect, but it does mean God is faithful. Christians do not believe the Bible survived because humans are flawless. We believe God has preserved His Word through history. The message of Scripture has not disappeared: God created, humanity sinned, God promised rescue, Jesus came, Jesus died, Jesus rose, and salvation is offered through Him. The Bible you read today is trustworthy for knowing God and following Christ.

Personal Application:

If a friend says, “The Bible has been changed,” try not to answer with panic. You can calmly ask, “What do you mean by changed?” That question matters. Sometimes people mean translations are different. Sometimes they mean copying mistakes exist. Sometimes they mean someone intentionally rewrote Christianity. Each claim needs a different answer. Asking helps you avoid arguing against something your friend did not mean.

A simple response could be: “The Bible was copied by hand for centuries, so small copy differences exist, but because we have many manuscripts, scholars can compare them and see what the text said. The main message of Christianity has not been lost.” You do not need to pretend there are no questions. Honest faith admits real history and still trusts God’s preservation. Truth does not become weaker when examined carefully.

This week, choose one verse that has strengthened your faith and memorize it. Let God’s preserved Word become personal to you. It is good to know evidence about manuscripts, but do not stop there. Read the Bible as God’s living Word. Let it correct you, comfort you, and guide you. The best defense of Scripture includes both clear reasons and a life being shaped by what Scripture says.
